Concert Band Expectations

Performance Responsibilities

Public performance is an integral part of the O.B.H.S Band program. They provide both an enriching musical experience and the opportunity to develop poise, responsibility, commitment, and pride. Attached you will find a schedule of musical events, please mark your calendars accordingly. Attendance at all football games, parades, and concerts are mandatory! Please make the necessary adjustments to your work/ activity schedules now! Don't wait until the last minute!

Written Assignments

A public performance cannot be repeated. Therefore, if a student misses a performance due to a legal absence, he/she may be excused with a note from a parent or guardian AND will be given a written assignment to complete. The length and topic of the assignment will depend on the nature of the missed performance.

Class Participation

There are 41 minutes in each period. Therefore, it is imperative that we follow theses basic guidelines to operate an efficient and productive rehearsal:

  1. Be prompt. Lateness will not be permitted without a late pass.
  2. Be prepared. Instrument/Music/Pencil/Supplies. A pencil is provided in every folder. If you lose it, replace it. Supplies (reeds, valve oil, etc.) will be available for purchase before the start of the rehearsal only!
  3. No food or drink is allowed in the band room at any time!! Persons without a designated lunch period will be allowed to eat in the chorus room during the last 10 minutes of class. No exceptions will be made to this rule!!
  4. No candy or gum is permitted in the band room - if this needs explaining, please see number 3.
  5. Do not talk or play while the teacher is talking or working with others.
  6. Rehearsal will begin approximately 3 minutes after the second bell has rung. Students should be ready to play at this time.
  7. Smile! This is probably the most overlooked, but also the most important. A good attitude will go a long way to making this an enjoyable experience for all.

Lessons

All band members are required to attend one rotating lesson per week. Each teacher will have the lesson schedule posted in their classrooms-- refer to it. Students are to report to their scheduled class prior to a lesson in order to hand-in/pick-up assignments. Any absence to a lesson must be made up. Make-ups are during and after school by appointment. Lesson schedules will be made available weekly to all students and teachers.

Seating/Auditions

Seating in the concert band is determined largely by the ability and experience of each student, however not entirely. It is, therefore, possible (or even, probable) that an underclassman could be seated higher than an upperclassman. This will have a great impact on the performance level of our ensemble.

In the Fall semester, seating will be arranged by Mr. Helbock and by recommendation of Mr. Walker (9th grade only). In the Spring semester, placement auditions will be held for seating for the remainder of the year. This should give all students a chance to adequately prepare.

NYSSMA

The NYSSMA Solo Evaluation Festival is a wonderful way to receive positive criticism and critique from an unbiased, qualified, professional musician. It also provides the opportunity (if you are selected) to perform with other high school musicians at All-County and All-State. I encourage everyone to consider performing at the NYSSMA Festival this Spring.
